Spillers Conditioning Fibre Review

Wednesday, 14 March 2018

This is a review that is well over due but due to the events that I explained in my last update post here, I've not been in the mental state to be writing reviews.

Not long into this year I was approached my Spillers to trail out the Conditioning Fibre and write up a review on it after them seeing my previous post on the Speedy Mash Fibre.
During the time they contacted me Legacy's had lost any shape she had in her bum due to the first set of temperature drops this year, so because of that I thought it would be a great time to try this out.

I'm a firm believer of the horses diet being closet to it would within the wild meaning mainly fibre. I try to keep concentrates to a minimum with Legacy & Cloudy's food. The Conditioning Fibre is great for this as it's a complete feed meaning when fed at it's recommended amount this is all you need to give your horse. The Fibre is filled with natural fibres to bulk out the food to keep them eating and to prevent them from rushing their food. It has good protein sources and rapeseed oil added to help build up the condition without excitability, this is a great selling point for this product as their are so many people that want to add condition without compromising their horse's behaviour which may happen when feeding traditional cereal based conditioning feeds. The energy from this comes from the fibres and oils which make them slow releasing, compared to the cereal based feeds which uses the cereals for quicker releasing energy.
Amongst the rest of the natural ingredients their is also grass nuts added in for a bit of something different.

The stats on the feed are:
Digestible Energy - 11MJ/kg
Oil - 10%
Protein - 12%
Fibre - 21% - High in fibre
Starch - 7% - Low in starch

Legacy's recommended amount is 3-4kg a day, this was spread out between 2 meals, morning and night. In each meal she had 2-3 Stubbs scoops per meal. Each Stubbs scoop holds 0.6kg of the fibre, meaning she had between 1.2kg and 1.8kg a meal. This is keeping it under the 2kg per meal feeding recommendation. For Legacy's meals she would have the fibre and a small scoop of sugar beet to add some moisture into the meal for her. This feed can be fed dry or damp but Legacy prefers her food dampened hence why I add the sugar beet with her feed.

Here are some before and after pictures of using the feed for aprox a month and a half. For a 500kg horse a bag would aprox last about 2 weeks. I used 3 bags of the feed with her. Although in the after pictures of her side on she looks like she's lost a bit of weight compared to putting on but the way she puts weight on is that originally it will go onto her belly then over time it will disperse over to her bum to where she needs it.

Overall I really enjoyed using this food with Legacy, it was simple and there was no worry about her not getting enough of everything she needs. It cut the feed making time in half and she would just have scoops of this and beet, then mix. She definitely enjoyed this as she's never been the quickest of eaters but when having this meal she ate all her food quicker than Cloudy. Out of the 3 bags used on Legacy I was given 2 for free and I purchased the 3rd one as I realised I wasn't giving her the correct amount per day so I bought another one and fed the last of the first bag through to the 3rd at the correct amount. As she got up to the weight I wanted her to be at she's no longer on this feed but if I ever felt that she needed to put weight on again I would definitely consider this for her with how well it worked.
If you've got a horse that needs to put on weight or just some added shine and condition I really recommend this as there's nothing in there which could excite your horse and the starch is low which is also an added bonus.

*Although the bags of feed were provided for free all the opinions within this review are my own and Spillers had no influence over my views.

Hardy Etc Riding Leggings Review

Tuesday, 21 November 2017

Last month as it was hitting my birthday time, everyone was asking me what I would like. I hate saying to people what I want as I always find it to be too expensive and would rather them think of something to save me feeling guilty for asking for something. As my mum kept moidering me asking what I would like, I thought that I'd always wanted to try out a pair of riding leggings to see if the hype is worth it or just to try out running leggings.
I then did a bit of Google searching for some riding leggings that aren't full seat. I never thought it was going to be as hard as it was to find leggings that only had grippy knees and not a full seat.
I then came across these Hardy Etc riding leggings and bought them to try them out.

They are made from super stretchy fabric that allows complete freedom in the saddle with a silicone knee added for extra grip in the saddle.
These leggings also come with the feature of a side pocket on the thigh, great for your phone. The first time I wore these leggings was just around the house to see how comfortable they were, I kept my phone in the side pocket and it was so fitting there I went into my jacket pockets a couple of times and thought my phone was missing.

The phone side pocket is such a great feature as it makes your phone easily accessible while your around the house, doing yard work and riding. It's in a great position so your phone doesn't dig into you when you're riding either. There is plenty of length and width to fit a variance of different phones in there. The phone I have is the Sony xperia XA1 and there is plenty of space in there.

These leggings are super comfortable to ride in, they are great on ther waist so they're not digging in like I find some of my breeches do. They let you feel free and ride with the movement without feeling restricted.

There was only one downside to these leggings and it's the area on the leg to where the silicone has been added. As when I had my boots on only the top two strips of silicone were on show. Although these leggings are super comfortable and they help offer some great sticky on my seat saver with the material on the gel seat. I would wear these leggings even if they came without the gel stickys.
You can find these leggings and others available in white, blue and burgundy over on the Hardy Etc website here. They're priced up at £25 which is a great bargain as all the other leggings I've seen with any grip added have been £40+.

*I received these leggings half price in exchange for an honest review*

Spillers Speedy Mash Fibre Review

Monday, 6 November 2017

I recently tried out a bag of the new Spillers speedy mash fibre to try out on the 2 horses. They are already on fast fibre so with this being pretty much the same I thought I would give it a go to see how they got on. Even getting the bag I was a little sceptical as it gives out an apple aroma and taste for the horses, now this would be great for most horses but knowing Legacy is a little iffy with apples and apple tasting products I thought she'd be a good judge.

Some of the product features are:
- Fast soaking in 60 seconds.
- It's safe to give to laminitics and those prone.
- Cereal & Molasses free, high in fibre and low in starch and sugar making it great for good doers and those in light work.
- It contains prebiotic fos and probiotic live yeast to help support optimum digestive health.
- It supplies quality protein to help maintain topline and muscle tone.
- It includes vitamins and minerals including chelated zinc and copper to help maximise absorption.
- It's great for older horses with poor teeth and those who are struggling to chew long fibre.

What Legacy and Cloudy thought of the product:
To first try this product out on the horses I got a sample bag of it, which was then halved and put into their feed for that day along with their graze on grass and some fast fibre to build up their feed amount. Cloudy went over and ate his food like normal without a care in the world, apart from having his ears back at the birds that wait around to pick at his left overs. Legacy was a little more suspicious with hers and gave it a little smell but then started to eat it up as usual.

After them eating the food I had a bag to try out with the two of them. I gave them their usual feed the first day trying it out, swapping the usual fast fibre out for the speedy mash. Like previously Cloudy dove right in and ate the food, Legacy on the other had was a little different. To start with she started to eat the food as usual then ended up sifting through the mash looking for the mix and grass. In the end she ended up leaving her food and heading over to the haynets to eat. We tried her out on the speedy mash again the next day and she just left it again, resulting in Cloudy eating what she'd left over.
After trying this out I bought her a bag of fast fibre to put her back on while keeping Cloudy on the speedy mash.

Here I've done a comparison of both the fast fibre and speedy mash dry, these are both 1 stubbs scoop worth which is 1.5kg dry weight of fast fibre and 1.7kg dry weight of speedy mash.

And here is a comparison of the two feeds wet and 60 seconds.

Since finishing the bag with Cloudy Legacy has started to go over and start to steal his food when he still has some left over. This has left me thinking that she will eat the food but only in small amounts. With this food biggest competitor I would say is the fast fibre I feel the apple aroma and taste gives the speedy mash a good edge and opens up to some more customers who like the idea of the apple, it will also close out some customers who have fussy horses like Legacy.

Verdict from Legacy: Bit Iffy with it so I won't feed it to her.
Verdict from Cloudy: Will eat it.

If you're looking for a high fibre feed or a soakable feel to keep your horse fuller for longer I would definitely give this a go, as it's high in fibre and low in starch & sugar but if you're horse is already on fast fibre and doing great personally I wouldn't change over and I can't see it doing much different than fast fibre.

You can find out some more info and work out how much to feed on the Spillers website here, or you can try it out at a reduced introductory price of £7.99 (£9.49 RRP) here.

*I did receive a bag to try out for free through my work but have received nothing for this review and all opinions are my own (and my horses).

Horslyx Respiratory Lick Review

Monday, 17 April 2017

This review is a Cloudy based one. The reason I chose the respiratory lick is because Cloudy has been known to suffer with choke and will cough throughout the winter when in the stable depending on how dusty it is. So the reason behind choosing this is because it's designed to provide a unique approach to supporting the respiratory system. The ingredients such as menthol, eucalyptus and aniseed supports the airways and helps keep them clear of mucus which helps the horse breathe more easily. The minerals such as Vitamins C & E, selenium, chelated copper and zinc in the balancer package help maintain immunity which then helps support and aid a healthy lung function.
The high oil content helps for healthy skin and coat while the Biotin, zinc and methionine helps with healthy hooves.
The 2 main reasons to why I chose this one for Cloudy are:

  • If your horse is prone to coughing or any respiratory compromise, Respiratory Horslyx Balancer can support the body’s natural defense mechanism.
  • For horses that are stabled for long periods of time, Respiratory Horslyx Balancer can help maintain healthy breathing and lessen the chance of ill-health affecting performance levels.
After the first night of giving Cloudy the lick this is how I found his stable the next morning. Safe to say he'd had some fun fighting with the lick to get it out. Please excuse the mass amount of poo in this picture, this was on a bad night haha. After retrieving and trying to clean the lick the best I could, I paired up the licked with it's container again for him. The next night he'd managed to get it out of the pot again and hide it in a pile of hay, thankfully the third night he had it, it stayed in the pot.
After all the fighting with it to get at it I'm sure he loved the lick. I was also told that he had brown patches on his nose from where he was getting in there to get at the lick.

Now although Cloudy loves these licks, Legacy isn't that keen on them. I bought her one after the Nettex one's she used to have stopped being sold in my place of work so I thought I'd try her out with the original one. She has licks in her stable to try keep her occupied while she's in there for a long period of time. This is mainly because she gets stressy and starts to box walk and crib bites. When I first put down the Original tub she went over for a little smell, but wasn't majorly bothered with it. I thought she'd take a few days to try it out, but it ended up just staying in her stable gathering dust. In the end I had to throw it as it had gone to bad to give to Cloudy.

These licks are great if you have a horse that's not needing any food and is on a good forage diet. These can supply all the vitamins & minerals needed for a balanced diet for them. They are weather-proof which is great for being used in the field as well as the stable.
They come in 3 different sizes
- 650g which lasts 3-4 days
- 5Kg which lasts 20-25 days
& 15Kg which lasts 60-75 days
The length of time they last depends on the size of your horse and how much they use it for.
They also come in 4 different flavours Original, Respiratory, Garlic & Mint.

The average prices for them are:
 650g one is £3.50 - £4.50
5kg one is £14.00 - £16.00
& 15kg one is £28.99 - £34.00

The original is the cheapest one and then the flavoured or specialised ones are more expensive.
You can also get a stable holder for the 5kg tub, and a ground holder for the 15kg tub.

Here are 2 sites I've found which sell a range of the Horslyx.

Acavallo Gel Out Seat Saver Review

Wednesday, 5 April 2017

Amazingly this is something that I'd never seen or heard of online before it was mentioned to me on the yard. At first I was very much confused and put off by the idea of having so much gel on the seat. I always thought it wouldn't give you much movement in the saddle or I'd be stuck not being able to do any rising with my trot.
But then one day I actually realised that I was spending my time correcting myself in the saddle quite a bit due to it being slippy, and it was worse when it came to the rare time I gave my tack a clean. I then found that I could only ride comfortably when I had full seat breeches on, and with the price tag of these I thought I'd do some research into this seat saver.

I found out that it's unique breathable gel construction supports the body of the rider by stabilising the bones and prevents and unnecessary movement. It also majorly reduces concussion in the lower back, helping people with any back problems. It's discreet and easy to fit, and helps the rider stay secure while training or hacking and helps achieve a deep and stable seat. They are also British Dressage legal.

After having a bit of a research and reading some reviews I found there was also a gel in version to where the gel is on the inner side of the seat saver and sticks to the saddle rather than your bum. The upper part which you sit on which this one was like a suede material, so it would give you some extra grip in the saddle compared to a naked saddle but not as much as the gel out one. My mum then decided to invest into a gel out seat saver for Cloudy, this was back when I was riding him and decided to give it ago. At first I was sold on the idea and found it weird to sit on, but the more I was riding Cloudy I actually came around to the idea and felt more comfortable and secure in the saddle, granted he decided to throw me off twice in one schooling session not long after but I stayed on much longer with it that I probably would've without.

I was then on the hunt to buy one for Legacy, and I got hers in black and in the medium size. There are 3 sizes available they come in pony (15-16"), medium (16.5-17") and large (17.5-18") and available in 2 colours of black and brown. You can get them in 2 different cuts gp/jumping and dressage.
This seat saver has saved me from going flying off Legacy quite a few times where she likes to have her moments and bolt off or when I ask her for trot and she decides to canter. It has also offered me some security in the saddle when it comes to hacking out as she does like to nap and then go or she will play up in the road. These are also great for big moving horses as they will help keep you still in the saddle.
I would not like to ride a horse without one of these as I have become reliant on how secure this makes me feel in the saddle, I think it would feel like I was learning to ride again in a way without one of these. I would recommend these to anyone all day long and I can't rave about them enough. With the price of them starting from £60, it can be quite a bit for an initial outlay but I would say it's 100% worth the investment. They last for years if looked after the right way and if you do get one I will be shocked if there is anyone not happy with it, and also you'll then be the one not wanting to ride without it.

I have looked around for the best prices for you all and I have found a few of the gel out ones on eBay here. This link includes both the gel in and gel out seat savers. Most of these offer free postage which is a great added bonus with the amount being spent.

Stud Muffins Treats Review

Monday, 27 March 2017

Now Legacy can be quite fussy when it comes to treats and trying new things. So when I first seen these I wasn't sure to buy them for her to try or not, but then I thought hey even if she won't eat them Cloudy will give them a go. They come in 3 different size packs of 3, 15 & 45. I decided to just pick up the 3 pack to try them out.
These are not only general treats for horses but they have some great health benefits too with having human grade raw materials including Linseed, Fenugreek and Whole grains. These treats are also made up with oats, barley, wheat & molasses so if your horse reacts to any of these it's best to give in small portions.

After not being sure to get these of not for so long it turned out that I shouldn't have waited around. Both horses ended up loving them, the first time Legacy had one her eyes looked like they were going to pop out of her head, I gathered this was due to the molasses in them. Cloudys reaction was pretty much the same.
Although these are perfectly safe to give in moderation I tend to only give these to the horses on occasions such as their birthdays and christmas. I get a pack of 3 and they have 1 1/2 each.
As I said these come in packs of 3, 15 and 45.
They are a great price of average
- £1.20 for a pack of 3
- £5.99 for a pack of 15
& £10 for a pack of 45

These prices will vary depending on where you buy them, but I found them for great prices over on VioVet, Plus postage is nice & cheap over on there.

Here's a video of each horse loving their stud muffins:

Summer Rug Wishlist

Friday, 24 March 2017

Although Legacy has many rugs there are also a few I'd like to add into her summer wardrobe. So here's my summer rug wishlist.

First up is the Shires Performance Maxi Flow Waterproof Fly Rug

This rug has:
- A 600D Shiretex waterproof top section
- A breathable top section
- Tough top section to help against any nicks which fly rugs are prone to.
- Lower section made from maxi-flow mesh
- A Neck cover which has the velcro closure
- & an adjustable belly flap for maximum coverage.

  • Now Legacy isn't one to majorly summer with the general horse flys but the bot flys just love to chase her around the field. I feel I spend most of my time trying to skill them when I'm with her. I feel this rug would be great as it would help her with the summer sun against her skin, as she goes very dark in the summer she can struggle with the heat throughout the summer. This is great as the British summer weather is so unpredictable you wouldn't know if your going to need a fly rug one day and a light weight from the rain the next, so this doubles up as both and you won't spend most or your time wondering if you need to change the rug or not.
Next on my list is the Weatherbeeta Kool Coat Combo

This rug has:
- A durable 230 Poly-cotton outer which allows the air to circulate around and keep the horse cool
- It's ideal to keep the sun from bleaching the coat of dark horses
- It keeps the horse clean and cool on the hot and sunny days, it's ideal for horses which absorb the heat

This one rug I know I won't get much use out of but it's also one I think would be vital to have in Legacy's summer wardrobe due to her coat getting darker in the summer. At times she even looks black. Although she does live by the sea and she is lucky to have a breeze to cool her down sometimes from the sea, she does get quite hot throughout the summer when the sun's out. I've chosen the combo neck over the standard with this as I feel she'd need her neck covered as she gets very hot there throughout the summer. I bet this rug wouldn't stay as white as it arrives long though as Legacy would typically go for a roll soon as she's let loose back in the field.

Finally on my list I would be happy with any of these 2, first up is the Shires Tempest 100g standard neck rug

 This rug has:
- 100G quilted filling
 600D ripstop
- Breathable ShireTex Outer
- Tapered Seams
- Blanket Set Breast Fastenings
- Adjustable Cross Surcingles & Fillet String
& A Tail Flap.

Now Legacy already has a 100g standard neck rug but I would like to have a new one and add it onto my wishlist as the one she already has doesn't fit her as well as this cut of rug does.
This rug is ideal for the chiller spring/summer/autumn night's where a no fill offers no warmth and doesn't do the job. It has just enough fill to keep Legacy warm throughout those nights.

The other rug which I would also be happy having under this category would be the Weatherbeeta Comfitec Plus Dynamic Standard Neck

This rug has:

- 1200D ripstop Outer
- 100g Polyfill
- A Memory foam wither pad to fit to the horses shape and lift the rug off the withers to prevent rubbing.
- 2 Eazi-clips for fast and easy closing
- Large tail flap
- Reflective strips on tail flap and front flaps
- Leg straps
- Side gusset for easy movement.

There isn't much difference between the 2 of these rugs in terms of what they are used for, okay they have different features and there is one more tougher than the other but I'm very lucky with Legacy and she does look after her rugs and I've never had to throw away a rug due to her wrecking it in the field. She's only had a few nicks here and there. The 2 horses have the medium detach a neck version of this same rug as a spare between the 2 of them, and it's a great fit for them both, lovely high neck for those who struggle to get that in rugs. It leaves them with plenty of room and freedom to run around and the memory foam wither pad is great on Cloudy who is always loosing a bit of this mane to rugs.

Find this rug on EquineSuperstore and get a free miracle brush, currently £66.99 reduced from £79.99, you also get free delivery on orders over £45.

Shires Tempest 300g Combo Review

Monday, 13 March 2017

I know it's a bit late on in the year but I just had to write my review on this rug now, it couldn't wait until next winter. Although I bet there are some clipped or even unclipped horses out there now still in medium-heavy or heavy weight rugs the weather has been so awful in this country recently. And with another set of bad weather supposed to be on it's way soon before we get the nice weather I thought I'd throw this in there now. This is a great rug to have if a heavyweight is too warm and a medium weight is too cold.

This is the Shires Tempest Original 300g Combo Rug.
Some of the key features for this rug are:
- 600D ripstop
- Breathable ShireTex Outer
- 300G Quilted Polyfill
- Tapered Seams
- Blanket Set Breast Fastenings
- Velcro Closure on Neck
- Adjustable Cross Surcingles & Fillet String
& A Tail Flap.

To the left is a picture of Legacy when she first got the rug, before she went out and rolled in it to cover it in mud.
The rug fits her body shape really well, she's had no rubs on her shoulders, withers or her mane. I know that some people really struggle to find combo rugs that don't rub away any part of the mane.
I've always been really lucky with Legacy and all of her combo rugs have fit really well and I've been able to avoid this.
This rug has a nice sized neck that doesn't leave too much behind the ears exposed, another great part about this neck is that it stays in place and doesn't slip down towards the body. There is a velcro neck closure on the neck where it folds back on itself through rings for security.
The tail flap on this rug may only be small in comparison to others but it's attached in a way it gives great protection from the weather elements. It always stays down and never flaps back up onto the body of the horse.

Although this rug is only 600D, it's managed to survive 2 winters without any rips or leaks. Legacy is good when it comes to not making holes in rugs and looks after them but there is bit's of barbed wire around the field because of the sheep so there is always that possibility when the horses are playing or trying to get to grass.
Legacy has worn this rug in some bad weather this winter including some of the recent storms and it has held up really well. Not once has the rain been too much and the rug has started to leak or get damp.

Overall I would really recommend this rug and I would definitely consider buying a Shires rug when I'm in need of one next.

Horse Fiction Books; Island Trilogy by Tudor Robins

Tuesday, 19 April 2016

There are some really great horse fiction books out there, old ones and new ones. A trilogy which I recently came across through the first book being free on Amazon Kindle is the Island Trilogy, the first book which is still free for Kindle is Appaloosa summer. I didn't  buy the next 2 until I'd read the first to see how it went, but although people say not to judge a book by it's cover but by doing just that I knew I was going to love these books.

I will leave the blurb for the first book from Goodreads here now;

Sixteen-year-old Meg Traherne has never known loss. Until the beautiful, talented horse she trained herself, drops dead underneath her in the show ring.
Jared Strickland has been living with loss ever since his father died in a tragic farming accident.
Meg escapes from her grief by changing everything about her life; moving away from home to spend her summer living on an island in the St. Lawrence River, scrubbing toilets and waiting on guests at a B&B.
Once there, she meets Jared; doing his best to keep anything else in his life from changing.
When Jared offers Meg a scruffy appaloosa mare out of a friend’s back field, it’s the beginning of a journey that will change both of them by the end of the summer.

These books are great fun reads that will leave you not wanting to put your Kindle down.
I'm pretty sure I got through a book a day or a day and a half at a push with work& Legacy. If I thought I was going to finish a book while I was in work I would make sure the next one was bought so I could start right away. These books had me hooked and I must admit I was a little lost when I finished them, & these are books which I could easily start to ready again on a summers day.

Although the first book is no longer free on Kindle unless you have Kindle Unlimited it is still only £5.96 and is available here and the next 2 books and also available for £3.20 & £7.17 here & here
I'm looking forward to finding more books like these which can be quite easy reads but are still very interesting to keep me hooked, let me know if you recommend any and If you've read this books already let me know what you thought of them on there or over on my twitter @xraceradventure

The pictures and blurb were taken from Goodreads.

NAF Hedgy Treats Review

Tuesday, 29 March 2016

Legacy loves her treats, and when NAF brought out their new Hedgy treats I just had to get her some to try. They are made with natural ingredients which include read hedgerow herbs, so she's not only getting a treat but it's healthy for her.

The herb ingredients in the treats are as follows;
Common Nettle,
Hawthorn Berries,
Dandelion Leaves
Rose hip Shells

These are all herbs which horses could find in the field which proves it's natural and healthy. If you're horse doesn't have any of these in their field these treats are a great way to add home variety into their diet.

Back when Legacy cut her head open and I wasn't able to bring her head down to get a good look into the cut, I fetched these and she was happily bringing her head down to eat these.
These treats have even resulted myself having a black eye from my mums horse, I was using them to keep him still while trying a new rug on him and I moved into the stable rather than over the door and he flew his head up to look where the treats have gone, and his head flew up into my face, splitting the edge of my eye open and then having a black eye for a few days.

The lesson I learnt from that day is to never under estimate the power of some tasty treats.

Here are a few links to where you can check out the treats;
